Youth Mentoring -Be a Hero- Bowl-A-Thon Raises $7,000

By Kathy Schwartzhoff, Mentoring Coordinator

We are taken back by the generous community response to the Be a Hero Youth Mentoring Bowl-a-thon held March 26 at Oneota Lanes in Decorah.

Approximately 85 bowlers wore capes, Batman shirts, took pictures with Wonder Woman, and posed in the photo booth to celebrate the heroes of the day: mentors. The fundraiser brought in approximately $ 7,000 to provide caring adult role models for youth in Allamakee, Howard, and Winneshiek Counties.

Erin Piper, team member from Marine Credit Union shares,

“For the past several years Marine Credit Union has brought several enthusiastic teams to this event. Our bank was proud to be part of the day and to support local youth with great relationships.”

True community heroes were the event sponsors, the bowlers, and the donors. There were many whooshes, zaps, and bams as participants cheered the strikes, spares, and even gutter balls. Donations are still coming in. If you would like to be a hero and financially connect with this mission, you can. Gifts can be made securely online  or can be mailed to PO Box 372, Decorah, IA 52101.

Youth Mentoring provides an adult mentor who spends 4 hours a month with a youth, ages 5-16. Currently, 49 youth are enjoying time with a mentor, and 16 youth are waiting for a mentor.
