Barb Fjelstul Introduction

My name is Barb Fjelstul, the Director of Family Education & Support for Helping Services for Youth & Families and I have an awesome job. For almost 16 years, I have been lucky enough to meet all kinds of families across a four county area.  I have also been fortunate enough to work with them and watch their children grow and meet their developmental milestones and eventually head off to preschool. I have had parents approach me and tell me what a difference they felt I had made in their and in their child’s life.  How is this possible you ask? It’s called in-home family visiting.

What is in-home family visiting, you ask; by using the Parents as Teachers™ approach, home visits with families that have children up to age three receive the following:  breastfeeding support, child passenger safety (car seat checks), developmental assessments, infant & child weight checks, vision & hearing screenings and general parent support.  We serve families in Howard, Allamakee, Winneshiek and Clayton counties.

We work with a variety of community service partners and have a plethora of resource and referral information for families. We engage families and communities of all types, beliefs and challenges for maximum child development, enriched parent-child interaction and involved neighborhoods.  This better ensures every child, beginning at birth, will be healthy, safe and successful. To learn more about our work please visit helpingservices.org/services/family-support-services or give me a call 563-387-1720.

Thank you,

Barb Fjelstul
Director of Family Education & Support
