Domestic Violence Advocate - Clayton & Northern Fayette County

Job Description: Seeking a passionate, empathetic and organized individual to provide trauma informed and inclusive crisis intervention direct services to domestic violence survivors in Clayton county and Northern Fayette county. This position includes assisting Resource Center clients by providing support, advocacy, safety planning, information and outreach to area programs in both emergency and non-emergency settings. Position also includes providing presentations and outreach on assisting survivors. Qualifications: BA/BS in Social Work, Psychology, Nursing, Education or related field or experience in field of volunteerism for social issues and/or crisis intervention. Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends when on call. Ability to travel in service area, or overnight within the State of Iowa. Strong oral, written and interpersonal skills. Proficient in basic computer skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide trauma informed and inclusive direct services to Domestic Abuse Resource Center (DARC) survivors, including support, advocacy, crisis intervention, safety planning, information and referrals.
  • Provide emergency and non-emergency advocacy and support to domestic violence survivors, including safety, transportation, educational counseling, medical, civil/criminal court or personal advocacy following best practice protocol and strategies.
  • Network to create strong collaborative linkages with other emergency service providers in service area to improve systemic responses to domestic violence survivors.
  • Provide outreach to non-emergency service providers in service area on effective and efficient strategies for supporting survivors of violence with their expertise and available resources.
  • Provide information and education to community, school or church groups to raise awareness and support for a non-violence culture. Includes electronic outreach/education such as Facebook, email and website communication.
  • Understand and adapt to service changes in the field at the national, state or local level.
  • Assist in maintaining resource line with staff and volunteers, rotating daytime, after hours, holiday and weekends on call.
  • Know community resources and options and assist in connecting survivors to them.
  • Co-facilitate or facilitate support groups with staff or collaboratively with other service providers.
  • Participate in initial and on-going training and mentoring of new staff and volunteers.
  • Understand and utilize principles of trauma informed care and the empowerment philosophy of advocacy
  • Develop and maintain an active network of community collaborators throughout the service region.
  • Perform other duties as requested by supervisor or Executive Director
Administrative
  • Compile statistics and information for agency or funders
  • Comply with policies and procedures set by agency/program, including the annual evaluation process.
  • Support agency electronic communication such as Facebook and website for currency and accuracy
  • Perform other duties as requested by supervisor or Executive Director
Professional Development
  • Attend conferences, coalition meetings, interagency meetings, or any other community organization meetings determined necessary by supervisor or Executive Director.
  • Apply for and maintain certification requirements as determined by Iowa Code and supervisor.

PREVENTION COORDINATOR

Do you enjoy working with the public? We are looking for someone who is driven, positive, self-motivated, and organized.  We work with communities, businesses, and schools on substance use and problem gambling prevention to promote healthy choices. Training will be provided. This full-time position will assist with managing and implementing prevention services to counties in Northeast Iowa with an office based in West Union or Decorah. Qualifications Full-time position with 1.0 FTE dedicated to the ARPA-Integrated Provider Network grant. The salary will be based on experience. Classified as Exempt.
 
BA/BS in Social Work, Public Health, Nursing, Health Promotion, Education, or a related field, or a Certified Prevention Specialist. Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends. Ability to travel in the service area, overnight within the State of Iowa, and nationally for training. Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills. Proficient in basic computer skills. Ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations. EOE.

Do you have an interest in social work?  Are you passionate about the unique world of nonprofits and how they work?  Helping Services has an internship for you!  We serve the northeast corner of Iowa.  Because of our rural region, we combine many services under one roof.  These services include:

  • Domestic Abuse Advocacy
  • Family Education (particularly birth to age 3 along with other parenting programs)
  • Prevention Programs that educate the public and work with retailers on important information regarding the use of drugs and problem gambling
  • Youth Mentoring
