April Substance Use Events

Helping Services partnered with Luther College Wellness to put together two events in April. The first event on April 7th was the documentary If They Had Known, which is a real life example of a college student who mixed alcohol and a prescription medication and later died. After the screening of the documentary, Jessica Rupp, Health Education and Promotion Coordinator at Luther College held a discussion about the harms of mixing alcohol and prescription medication, along with a brief discussion on the Good Samaritan Law. More information on this event can be found at the Luther College newspaper Luther CHIPS.

The second event on April 21st was a panel on substance use. Helping Services joined with Northeast Iowa Behavioral Health and the Winneshiek County Sheriff Office to discuss opioids & stimulant drugs, the prevalence of drugs in the area, and the resources available in Northeast Iowa to aid in recovery. For any questions on the topic or for more information about prevention at Helping Services, contact Brooke Kunkel at bkunkel@helpingservices.org.
