Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Helping Services for Youth & Families’ Domestic Abuse Resource Center (DARC) is recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness during the month of October. In Iowa and around the world, October is a month to create awareness around domestic violence, using the color purple to symbolize the cause.

Helping Services’ Domestic Abuse Resource Center advocates work alongside survivors each day to provide options around safety and healthy outcomes for clients and their families. Supporting survivors is the number one goal. One way that the advocates support survivors is through the client supply pantry. The pantry allows survivors to receive household items they need to establish themselves in a safer living situation at no cost thanks to generous donations from the community. This past year the demand for these items has been greater than ever. We are in need of the following items:

  • Baby diapers and wipes
  • Cleaning supplies (including laundry detergent and dish soap)
  • Paper products (toilet paper and paper towels)

To donate to support the client pantry, purchase the item at your local store, and items can be delivered to the Helping Services office located at 805 E Main St. Decorah, IA 52101 or call the resource line at 800-383-2988.

Last year, the Helping Services’ DARC team of advocates and volunteers assisted over 1600 survivors of domestic abuse in the 7 counties the team serves (Allamakee, Bremer, Chickasaw, Clayton, Fayette, Howard, and Winneshiek). Staff and volunteers also answered 1,522 calls on our Resource Line and provided 58 transportation trips for clients.
