Last week, a mother of five children sought us out, asking for help. She was two months behind in paying rent. Her estranged husband, who was responsible for paying the rent, had let it go. Because of injuries from physical abuse by her husband, she was unable to complete all the required tasks of her job, so her employer cut back her hours to pay someone else to finish her work.
Though we couldn’t cover all of the missing rent, dollars from the donor-driven Emergency Housing Fund brought this mother a little financial ease and some hope, knowing that her neighbors care about supporting her.
