Are E-cigarettes the Newest Cigarette Trend?

What’s an e-cigarette?

An electronic cigarette runs on batteries, a person inhales an e-cigarette as he/she would a typical cigarette.  When inhaled, the battery warms liquid nicotine stored in a plastic filter.  The combination of heat and liquid creates the vapor or “smoke” puff when exhaled.

Are they safer then a cigarette?

Dr. Jonathan Samet, director of the Institute of Global Health, notes that e-cigarettes have no proven benefits but very clear risks.  The Food and Drug Administration considers e-cigarettes an unapproved drug because of a lack of scientific proof that they’re safe of effective.

To hear more about e-cigarettes attend the Fayette County Tobacco Coalition Meeting on October 1st at Pizza Ranch in Oelwein beginning at 11:30.  The meeting is open to the general public and persons interested in helping to make a difference in their community are encouraged to attend.

The Fayette County Tobacco Coalition is busy working to reduce secondhand smoke exposure, and building youth interest in tobacco related concerns. They are also, promoting cessations opportunities for individuals who want to quit smoking, and increasing the number of people interested in making tobacco related concerns a priority.
