Community members are invited to attend the Bridges Out Of Poverty training, which will be held in Room 115 of the Northeast Iowa Community College Dairy Center in Calmar.
This training will educate participants on the two types of poverty, situational poverty and generational poverty, and will discuss how poverty creates barriers to change. Bridges Out Of Poverty will encourage communities to examine local obstacles to getting out of poverty, take actions to remove those obstacles, and help people move towards self-sufficiency.
This training will be broken down into two different sessions. Harold Blatt with Community Circle of Care will facilitate both sessions. People are invited to attend one or both sessions. The first session, which will be held from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., will address professional practices and is designed for professionals working in human services or with families. The second session, which will be held from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m., will address community action and is designed for any interested community members. Both sessions are free and open to the public.

Helping Services for Northeast Iowa’s Domestic and Sexual Abuse Resource Center is seeking volunteers. Volunteers are able to answer the 24 hour crisis hotline, which can be transferred directly to your home phone or cell phone, transport victims of domestic violence from a neutral location to a safe home and/or provide a safe home, a safe place for victims of domestic violence to stay temporarily. Victims of domestic violence are never housed in the same county they reside. Volunteers can also be trained to respond to emergency situations.
To become a Victim Counselor with Helping Services volunteers must first complete a 24 hour training provided by Helping Services.
The training will discuss topics such as the social roots of violence against women, domestic violence and sexual assault dynamics, court and laws, children and violence and diversity. Victim Counselor’s are trained in responding to the needs of victims of domestic or sexual violence. The training is provided at no cost.
If you are unsure about volunteering as a victim counselor but are still interested in the training you are strongly encouraged to attend.
Luther College in Decorah, IA will be hosting the 24 hour training February 21, 23, 28 and March 1, 6, 8 from 6:00pm-10:00pm.
Free refreshments will be provided.
It’s important that all dates are attended because after completion of the training all attendees, 18 years and older, are eligible to become a Victim Counselor with Helping Services.
