Prevention of Substance Abuse Programs

School Based

Class Action

Class Action is a hands-on program for high school students that gives them the experience of acting as "judge and jury" in mock civil cases such as drinking and driving or date rape. The team members learn the real life consequences of underage alcohol use.

T.A.T.U. Teens Against Tobacco Use

Trained teens visit elementary classrooms and youth organizations as smoke-free role models to make presentations and lead activities related to the risks of smoking.

Project TNT - Toward No Tobacco Use

Sixth through eighth graders learn about the consequences of tobacco use in highly interactive classroom sessions over a four week period.

All Stars

This program for sixth and seventh graders reaches youth either in the classroom or in the community. It is proven to help delay the first time of alcohol use, postpone early sexual activity, and decrease violence. These 21 sessions are interactive and build positive peer support.

Puppet Pals and What's Up?

In Puppet Pals, six puppets enter the classroom of first and second graders to teach six sessions on alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; how to say no to friends; how to make good decisions; and how to cope when things are not going their way. "What's Up?" continues these same important lessons to fourth graders through activities and role-plays.

Life Skills

Life Skills is a program for elementary and middle school students that teaches skills useful throughout life. Students learn to resist alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; increase self-esteem; learn creative problem solving techniques; learn stress management techniques; and develop skills to avoid violence. This program is taught over a three-year period to increase its effectiveness.

Peer Helper Training

Teens go first to their friends when they have problems. Trained eighth graders interact with their peers using good listening, problem solving, and referral skills.

Education for Families

Strengthening Families

This six-session educational program is designed for families with children ages ten to fourteen. Parents and youth learn skills such as communication and problem solving to aide them in those difficult early adolescent years.

Families In Action

This education program for parents and their youth ages 11 to 18 is video and discussion based. Families learn skills in effective communication, how to handle topics such as alcohol and other drugs, and how to resolve conflict in non-violent ways.

Community Programs

N-O-T Not on Tobacco

N-O-T is a ten-session program for teens who smoke with a four session booster program later. Teens are encouraged to quit smoking or at least reduce the amount that they smoke. A healthy life style is also encouraged as well as a new sense of self control.

Freedom From Smoking

This program for adults, designed by the American Lung Association, focuses on how to quit smoking. In seven sessions participants learn positive behavior change as well as controlling symptoms of non-use such as weight control and stress management. This program has proven results.

Team Awareness

Team Awareness focuses on the place where most adults spend a good portion of their waking hours, the workplace. Supervisors and employees receive training to help them create healthier work environments, reduce the acceptance of abusive drinking, and increase work productivity with more satisfied employees.
